Make the letter the personal part

Write on a sheet that fits the envelope, then add a short note on the outside explaining when you would like the recipient to open it. Check the listing for envelope dimensions; writing paper may need to be purchased separately.

Start with the reason you chose this for this person. Name a real memory, explain what you hope to share, and leave them room to enjoy the gift in their own way. Avoid promising that an object will change the relationship.

Check before buying

• Check paper dimensions, sheet count and whether envelopes are included.
• For a pen, check the nib size, refill or cartridge type, and whether ink is included.
• Test ink on a spare sheet for smudging and bleed-through before writing the final letter.
